Marisol Granillo (pictured on the left, with fellow Fulfillment Fund alumna Fabiola Diaz) shares why she's running the ASICS LA Marathon with Team Fulfillment Fund on Sunday, March 15.
"I first encountered the Fulfillment Fund during my senior year at Hollywood High School in 2004. My best friend, Fabiola Diaz, told me about the College Pathways program the Fulfillment Fund offered at that time. I knew that if I were part of the Fulfillment Fund program, someone could help me to get to college...when I received the notification in the mail that I had been given the scholarship, it was literally life-changing.
As a first-generation college student, immigrant Hispanic woman living with a single father, life was challenging. I am extremely thankful the Fulfillment Fund was there for me to ease my educational stress. I really don't have enough words to thank the Fund for truly changing my educational life.
Now that I have found some balance in life, I am giving back to the Fulfillment Fund by serving as Vice Chair for Professional Development on the Fulfillment Fund's Alumni Ambassadors group. The main reason I decided to run the L.A. Marathon this year is to support and create more awareness of the amazing work the Fulfillment Fund does. Although this will be my eighth LA Marathon, it will be special because I am running for more than just an organization - it's a family of life mentors."
