With College Success Advisor Keily Molina
Community college was one of the best decisions I made as a first-generation college student figuring out my path. It gave me the time and space to discover what I really wanted to do without feeling pressured to have it all figured out right after high school.
For many students like me, community college is more than just an affordable option. It is a fresh start, a chance to explore, grow, and make mistakes, without feeling rushed to decide on your path, while providing an accessible and flexible way to explore your academic and career options. Most of us are still figuring out our path as we finish high school, and that is completely okay.

Community colleges provide students with both guidance and flexibility—something I experienced firsthand. My time at community college gave me the confidence to explore my interests and plan my next steps without pressure. As a recent article in Current Affairs titled “The Community College Is One of America’s Greatest Achievements” points out, these institutions help unite students rather than divide them. They offer access to both vocational programs and college-level courses, empowering us to make informed decisions about our futures—without the overwhelming burden of financial strain.

My Transfer Journey
Transferring to a four-year university was both exciting and challenging. At first, I felt nervous and uncertain as I navigated a new campus, adjusted to different academic systems, and stepped into an entirely new environment. However, over time, I gained confidence and developed important skills. I learned to advocate for myself, build meaningful connections with peers, faculty, and counselors, and stay focused on my goals.
The transfer process taught me resilience, patience, and the value of stepping outside my comfort zone. Looking back, I am proud of how far I have come and grateful for the experience that shaped me into who I am today.
