Grit and Perseverance – Victor’s Story

Victor’s journey to college wasn’t an easy one. From the start, he faced multiple hurdles: academic struggles, financial difficulties, and the daunting pressure of being the first in his family to attend college. But through grit, perseverance, and the support of his Fulfillment Fund counselor, Jenny, he transformed his challenges into stepping stones that led to a life-changing opportunity.

Victor was a senior at Los Angeles High School of the Arts (LAHSA) when he encountered a moment that could have shattered his college dreams. As a semi-finalist for the prestigious Dell Scholars Program, he had spent hours perfecting his application essay. But suddenly, disaster struck: The website refreshed, and all his work was lost.

A sinking feeling overwhelmed him. He was ready to give up—a young man just beginning to dream of attending college and living in the dorms. Imagine the crushing realization: hours of work gone in an instant. For many students, this would have been the breaking point, the moment when they would give up. “I was ready to quit,” Victor recalled. “I had worked so hard, and now it was all gone.” This felt like a potential U-turn, a threat to his aspirations. But by his side that evening, and still today, was his Fulfillment Fund counselor, Jenny, who encouraged him to rewrite his essay and supported him every step of the way through the process. Together, they stayed late after school to finish and submit his scholarship essay and application. Months later, Victor received the news that would change his life: he had been selected as a Dell Scholar, earning him a $20,000 scholarship from the Dell Scholars Program and a host of resources to support his college journey.

With the support of Jenny and the Fulfillment Fund team, Victor worked tirelessly to improve his grades. He retook English in his junior year and enrolled in Honors and AP classes while continuing to juggle his job. Jenny’s guidance helped him navigate the complexities of applying to college, and it was through these efforts that Victor gained access to opportunities like the Dell Scholars Program.

The $20,000 scholarship was more than just financial assistance. It was a lifeline that allowed Victor to live on campus at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) rather than having to commute from home. For a young man with limited resources, this scholarship meant he could focus on his studies and well-being, rather than worrying about the stress of rent or transportation.

Now, in his first semester at CSUN, Victor is thriving. “I’ve been able to stay more focused than I did in high school,” Victor shared. “The Dell Scholarship helped me pay for my dorm rent, which has really eased my stress. I’ve created a better environment for myself, and I’m doing well academically.” Victor’s success in college is a direct result of the resilience and determination he developed along the way. His journey was marked by challenges, but it was also fueled by the constant support of Fulfillment Fund, particularly his counselor, Jenny, who believed in him even when things seemed impossible.

Victor’s story is a powerful example of how support and belief can transform a life. The Dell Scholars Program values students who demonstrate perseverance, resilience, and the ability to overcome obstacles—traits that Victor has shown in abundance. Grit isn’t something you’re born with; it’s something that is nurtured and cultivated over time, often with the help of trusted mentors and resources. Fulfillment Fund students like Victor are given the tools to build resilience, face adversity head-on, and take chances on their dreams.

However, we know that grit alone does not guarantee success or overcome the significant challenges our students must navigate. Victor’s success isn’t just about the scholarship or his academic achievements—it’s about his character. “I’ve noticed that not everyone has the same opportunities as me,” he reflects. “That keeps me humble and motivated to do my best.” Today, as he continues his studies at CSUN, Victor remains focused on his goals, knowing that the challenges he’s overcome so far are only the beginning. With the support of Fulfillment Fund, his grit, and the opportunities he’s earned, there’s no limit to what he can achieve. Victor’s story is a reminder that, with the right support, perseverance can turn dreams into reality. His journey is just beginning—and it’s clear that his future is bright.
