What Going to College Means to Us

On College Decision Day, we asked a few of our graduating seniors to fill us in on what going to college means to them. Each one has a unique story, but a few similarities come through. Many will be the first in their family to earn a college degree and they hope to inspire others, while making their parents proud. The road to college isn’t always easy to navigate, but our students know that we are with them every step of the way. Keep scrolling to read how some of our soon-to-be college freshman are feeling!

Vanessa

Senior at Hamilton High School
Future College: UC Davis

Going to college means that I can become an independent person. I am looking forward to moving to Davis and dorming. It will be an experience that no one in my family has had so it’s scary and exciting at the same time. It also means that I can be an example for my younger cousins and show them that college can be a reality for them.

Brandon

Senior at NOW Academy
Future College: Cal State LA

Going to college means that I am paving the path to college for my younger siblings. I am the first person in my family to go to college so when it’s time for my younger siblings to go to college, they will have me to help them apply and give them advice. That’s very meaningful to me!

Sumaita

Senior at UCLA Community School
Future College: UC Irvine

Going to college means that I have the opportunity to repay my parents for all the sacrifices they have made for me. I am the first person in my family to go to college in America and that’s really important to me because it makes my parents proud. I feel incredibility happy that I am attending UCI and excited for all the new experiences.

Luy Geonhwi

Senior at ASGL
Future College: USC

Going to college means that I can have a career in something I am passionate about and be successful. At first the only reason I wanted to go to college was to make my parents proud but when I learned about everything that college has to offer, I began to have the desire to succeed for myself too. I really like economics so I’m looking forward to studying business at USC.

Jocelyn

Senior at ASGL
Future College: UCLA

Going to college means making my parents proud and breaking the cycle of poverty. I want to become a pediatric nurse, help my community and most importantly help my parents financially. It still feels so surreal to me that I got into UCLA. I never thought I would get in but with the help of my parents, counselors and the Fulfillment Fund, I am now a Bruin!
